Correction to: Lung Transplantation in the United States for COVID-19 Related Lung Disease During the Pandemic

In this article, the author noticed that the Title and some values in the Results section, Figures 1, 2, 4 caption and Figure 1 contain errors and need correction.

1.

In the Title, word count of the manuscript “(2597/2600)” was inadvertently published as part of the title. It should have been removed.

Corrected title: “Lung Transplantation in the United States for COVID-19 Related Lung Disease During the Pandemic”.

2.

In “Results” section under the heading “COVID-19 Related ARDS vs COVID-19 Related PF”, the values in the third sentence in the first paragraph should have been read as given below:

Incorrect sentences: Patients with ARDS tended to be sicker preoperatively, as patients were more likely to require intensive care (89.1% vs 47.1%, p < 0.0001) mechanical ventilation (61.4% vs 19.1%, p < 0.0001), have fewer days on the wait-list (median 11 vs 16 days, p = 0.0008) and have higher lung allocation scores (LAS) at the time of LTx (88.2 vs 60.3, p < 0.0001) when compared to PF.

Correct sentences: Patients with ARDS tended to be sicker preoperatively, as patients were more likely to require intensive care (89.1% vs 47.1%, p < 0.0001), mechanical ventilation (44.0% vs 17.5%, p < 0.0001), have fewer days on the wait-list (median 11 vs 16 days, p = 0.0008) and have higher lung allocation scores (LAS) at the time of LTx (88.2 vs 60.3, p < 0.0001) when compared to PF. ARDS patients were more often listed as “moribund” (14.3% vs 4.0%) or “very sick” (61.0% vs 34.3%) than PF.

3.

In “Results” section under the heading “COVID-19 Related ARDS vs non-COVID-19 ARDS”, the table citation and p values were incorrect in the first paragraph. It should have been read as given below:

Incorrect Sentences: Comparison of patients with COVID-19 related ARDS and non-COVID-19 ARDS can be found in Table 2a. Patients with COVID-19 ARDS were likely to be older (median 49 vs 43 years, p = 0.03) and male (74.9% vs 48.6%, p = 0.0009).

Correct Sentences: Comparison of patients with COVID-19 related ARDS and non-COVID-19 ARDS can be found in Table 2. Patients with COVID-19 ARDS were likely to be older (median 49 vs 43 years, p = 0.0312) and male (74.9% vs 48.6%, p = 0.0009).

4.

In “Results” section under the heading “COVID-19 Related PF vs non-COVID-19 PF”, the p values were incorrect in the last two sentences. It should be have been read as given below:

Incorrect Sentences: Postoperatively, COVID-19 patients were more likely to require prolonged ventilation (39.7% vs 21.7%, p < 00001), dialysis (12.4% vs 7.7%, p = 0.0320), ECMO at 72 h (19% vs 8.2%, p < 0.0001), and had a longer LOS (median of 21 vs 18 days, p = 0.0002). There were no differences in stroke rates. Interestingly, graft failure was less common in the COVID-19 group (12.8% vs 18.4%, p = 0.002). There was no difference in 2-year survival between groups (77.2% vs 71.8%, p = 0.34) (Fig. 2c).

Correct Sentences: Postoperatively, COVID-19 patients were more likely to require prolonged ventilation (39.7% vs 21.7%, p < 0.0001), dialysis (12.4% vs 7.7%, p = 0.0320), ECMO at 72 h (19.0% vs 8.2%, p < 0.0001), and had a longer LOS (median of 21 vs 18 days, p = 0.0002). There were no differences in stroke rates. Interestingly, graft failure was less common in the COVID-19 group (12.8% vs 18.4%, p = 0.0280). There was no difference in 2-year survival between groups (77.2% vs 71.8%, p = 0.3412) (Fig. 2c).

5.

The Figures 1, 2, 4 caption was incorrect. It should be have been read as given below:

Fig. 1 Consort diagram. *All recorded COVID-19 diagnoses include either acute respiratory syndrome (ARDS) or pulmonary fibrosis (PF).

Fig. 2 Two-year survival among lung transplant (LTx) patients with A) COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and pulmonary fibrosis (PF); B) COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 ARDS; C) COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 PF.

Fig. 4 Temporal histogram displaying incidence of lung transplantation for COVID-19 related lung disease corresponding to the delta and omicron variants as well as vaccination introduction. Black lines = Lung transplantation for either acute respiratory distress syndrome (above) or pulmonary fibrosis (below); Grey lines = Combined incidence of lung transplantation for all COVID-19 indications.

6.

There is a typo in within the consort diagram in Figure 1. That is, N = 200,217 should be N = 213,177. The corrected version of Figure 1 is given below:
