UNS Acting Rector’s Message to Graduates: Knowledge is Power, but Character is More

UNS – Dr. Chatarina Muliana, S.H., S.E., M.H., the Acting Rector of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, emphasized the importance of accompanying intelligence with noble character. She conveyed this message during the Graduation Ceremony for the fifth period of 2024 on Saturday (15/6/2024). The event, attended by 785 graduates, took place at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium, UNS.

“Knowledge is power, but character is more. Because intelligence is useless without good character,” Dr. Chatarina stated.

During their time in college, the graduates have gained a wealth of knowledge. However, equally important is the development of non-technical skills such as critical thinking, effective communication, and leadership. These skills enhance the quality of the graduates’ character.

As the leader of UNS, Dr. Chatarina stressed the importance of having a noble character. Behavior is a manifestation of one’s character. She imparted the wisdom, “If you want to change your destiny, then change your attitude.”

Dr. Chatarina warmly addressed the graduates with pride. They looked elegant and charming in their graduation gowns, symbolizing their academic achievement. Joy was evident on the faces of the graduates, parents, and guardians in attendance.

Dr. Chatarina is confident that the graduates’ time at UNS provided them with many experiences, lessons, and knowledge. She hopes that all these will sharpen their intelligence, strengthen their will, and refine their emotions as they move on to the next stage of life.

“On behalf of all the leaders of UNS, we extend our congratulations and best wishes to the 785 graduates for successfully completing their education and earning their academic degrees,” she said.

Today’s graduation is a testament to the hard work, smart work, and sincere efforts of the UNS graduates. Their dedication and perseverance over the years have yielded sweet results. This graduation marks a victory in one chapter of life.

A new chapter full of challenges is about to begin. Graduates will soon become a part of society, facing real-world opportunities and challenges. The global dynamics currently facing society present both opportunities and obstacles.

As UNS alumni, Dr. Chatarina hopes the graduates will become positive change agents in society. Their best contributions in their respective fields are eagerly awaited to solve existing problems. They should not only be part of the solution but also lead in addressing various issues.

“Be responsible, innovative leaders who care about your surroundings,” Dr. Chatarina advised.

The Alumni Pledge taken by the UNS graduates represents their commitment to the country and alma mater. “Mangesthi Luhur Ambangun Nagara” means aspiring to build the nation with noble intentions. This should be remembered as a shared responsibility.

The Acting Rector then concluded her speech with farewell rhymes and advice. The audience was filled with mixed emotions of sadness and happiness. The warm atmosphere enveloped the UNS Auditorium, marking the official end of the Graduation Ceremony for the fifth period of 2024.
