It Is Time for a Change!

Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.

George Bernard Shaw

It is with great pride and excitement that the ASAIO Journal is about to change its Editor-in-Chief. I had the tremendous opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Joseph B. Zwischenberger, MD, and take over the role 11 years ago. Dr. Zwischenberger transitioned the journal from a society-based transactions publication to a professionally run and peer reviewed journal. He laid the groundwork and helped to build the team to continue the success of the journal as a leader in publishing early ideas, innovation, and the ongoing development of artificial organs. In my first 5 years, we had two goals: transition to a monthly journal and achieve an impact factor of two. The last 5 years we wanted to become the leading artificial organs journal and start competing with other well-established journals. I believe that we not only achieved these goals but have exceeded them: Impact Factor 4.2 and triple the number of submissions. This was only possible due to the help and support of the ad hoc reviewers, Section Editors, Deputy Editor and members of ASAIO. Equally important, we have the best, most professional and talented Managing Editor, Michelle Gaffney, that any journal could hope to have! And being my usual lucky self, I have had the good fortune to have Jay (Dr. Zwischenberger) remain a friend, mentor, and always available colleague. I believe that the journal is the public face/representation of the society. That is why I am so proud that the journal reflects the great work, science, and innovation of its members and that science can be fun.1 As I had stated in my Presidential Address (many years ago), I firmly believe that ASAIO is a unique organization that fosters collaboration and creativity not found anywhere else. Thus, once again, I encourage everyone to have their students (MD, Masters, PhD), residents, new faculty, and colleagues become participating members of this great society. I am looking forward to the next chapter, as we transition the Editor-in-Chief to Pramod Bonde, MD. I hope everyone will continue to support the journal with their best work and pave the pathway for Dr. Bonde and the ASAIO Journal to continue its successful journey.
