In barrier tissues such as the skin, frequent encounters between non-invasive commensal microorganisms and resident T cells can result in the generation of commensal-specific T cells, which have been implicated in host defense and tissue repair. Now, reporting in Cell, Yasmine Belkaid and colleagues show that commensal-specific T cells promote the regeneration of damaged sensory nerves in the skin, through an IL-17-dependent pathway.
