“A Global Podium to the Gold Medallist”: “History of Prostatic Artery Embolization—Another Success Story of Interventional Radiology”

During the CIRSE 2014 meeting in Glasgow, I had the honour to deliver the “Josef Roesch Lecture” with the speech entitled, “Prostatic artery embolization: familiar concept, new indication and state-of-the-art methods”.

In the same year, we also published in CVIR an important paper entitled “The PErFecTED technique: proximal embolization first, then embolize distal for benign prostatic hyperplasia” [10]. This publication helped to support the data from the University of Sao Paulo Medical School, and the technique has shown great results and been adopted by several centres in the world.

In 2015, we published in CVIR a paper trying to help understanding the vascular anatomy of the pelvis and prostate entitled “Pelvic Arterial Anatomy Relevant to Prostatic Artery Embolization and Proposal for Angiographic Classification” [11].

In CIRSE 2016, Barcelona, I received the “Award of Excellence and Innovation in Interventional Radiology” for the pioneering research on prostate artery embolization as an alternative treatment for symptomatic patients due to enlarged benign prostate hyperplasia.

During the CIRSE 2017 in Copenhagen, we were awarded with the Editors' Medal for the clinical investigation paper “Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) Versus Original and PErFecTED Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) Due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Preliminary Results of a Single Center, Prospective, Urodynamic-Controlled Analysis “ [12].

Lastly, in Lisbon September 2024, I had the huge honour and pleasure receiving the award of Gold Medallist during the CIRSE meeting opening ceremony in recognition of the unique and outstanding contributions and achievements in interventional radiology. No words could express my feelings during that unique moment in my life…
