UNS – Students from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta conducted a socialization event titled “Efforts for Environmental Conservation and Household Waste Management into Compost.” This initiative is part of the Student Community Service Program (KKN) by Group 155, held in Plumpung Village, Plaosan Sub-district, Magetan Regency. The waste management solution aims to raise community awareness about environmental conservation and provides practical household waste management solutions in Plumpung Village.
UNS students carried out a series of socialization activities and demonstrations on how to turn household waste into compost. The program is designed to reduce waste starting from the smallest scale—households. The knowledge gained from this program is expected to lessen the burden on landfills and reduce environmental pollution in the future.
Aligned with the KKN UNS theme, “Education, Assistance, and Community Empowerment,” the program aims to help the community understand the environmental impact of waste and develop skills to turn waste into valuable products like compost. The initiative received a positive response from the residents and the Plumpung Village government, as it contributes to environmental conservation efforts.
The series of socialization programs was held at the Plumpung Village Hall. The event began with opening remarks from the Head of Plumpung Village, Wahyudiarto, followed by a speech from KKN UNS Group 155 coordinator, Wardiman Deva. The session continued with a material presentation and a demonstration of compost production.
“The materials needed for making compost include household organic waste and EM4 solution, which accelerates the decomposition of organic matter,” Deva explained to uns.ac.id on Friday (6/9/2024).
The KKN UNS initiative encourages active community participation in waste management. This effort also strengthens cooperation between residents, the village government, and environmental organizations. The program aims to create positive changes in daily waste management practices by fostering collective awareness and responsibility for environmental cleanliness.
The collaboration between KKN UNS Group 155, the community, and the Plumpung Village government is expected to continue. The community’s limited knowledge of effective composting methods is anticipated to improve following the socialization of this program.
“Turning household waste into compost is a practical solution to the waste problem in Plumpung Village. Through the efforts of KKN UNS Group 155, we hope that the community will take part in implementing composting in their own homes,” Wahyudiarto, Head of Plumpung Village, said.
