The new and old in superficial mesenchymal tumors with uncertain origin and/or melanocytic differentiation

The range of mesenchymal tumors that can be encountered in a skin biopsy or excision is broad. It includes benign indolent entities such as common dermatofibromas and hemangiomas and highly malignant ones such as primary and metastatic sarcomas. Particularly problematic for (dermato)pathologists are those tumors with uncertain nosology or aberrant melanocytic differentiation as they may require extensive workup or be misdiagnosed as melanomas. Given the rapid advancement in the characterization of these tumors, the non-comprehensive list provided in Table 1 is likely to evolve as more data becomes available. In this review, some of these entities will be discussed while others will be detailed elsewhere in this issue.
