To say good-bye to Professor Victoria Chan-Palay is not an easy task. She is more than a well-respected researcher and clinician – and this on three continents, in the US, Switzerland, and Singapore. She has served in the public sector in the US government as White House Fellow and assisted the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon, Washington DC. And she is the founder of this journal you have in hand. She is a fantastic Editor-in-Chief, extraordinarily committed and passionate, who also challenges Karger publishers with new ideas for the journal, pushing us forward to achieve the current success of both publications under her leadership.
Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders was founded in 1990 by Prof. Dr. Victoria Chan-Palay (Singapore) to become the single comprehensive forum for the researcher on dementia and cognitive diseases. Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders is today an internationally recognized and reputable forum. And it has fundamentally contributed for more than three decades as a source of quality research findings by renowned international scientists, clinicians, and early career researchers. Since the launch of Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders, which was originally named Dementia, we have published 51 volumes with contributions by more than 1,543 co-authors across 53 countries. Also, in 2010, Prof. Chan-Palay initiated the open-access sister journal Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders Extra in 2010.
On the 1st of January 2023, a new cycle initiates for Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders and Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders Extra. After leading the Journals as Editor-in-Chief for more than three decades, Prof. Chan-Palay steps down, and Prof. John B. Kwok (Sydney, Australia) will take over the role of both Journals’ Editor-in-Chief. After a thorough selection process, Prof. Kwok was appointed based on his outstanding research and experience. Prof. Kwok’s internationally recognized leadership in neurodegeneration and dementia and his extensive international network and broad review experience will be vital to the development and growth of the Journals.
We cannot end this Publisher’s Note without the expression of our heartfelt thanks to Prof. Chan-Palay for her continuous efforts and contributions as Editor-in-Chief of Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders and Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders Extra and her active and thoughtful engagement in steering the journals into their new phase. During her term, the Journals have successfully transitioned into the digital era and published manuscripts from all parts of the world. Under her leadership, both titles have become known for their excellence in scientific publishing and are today very successful among the dementia research community.
