The AMT flap offers all the advantages of the ALT flap without the added complication of increasing donor site morbidity. However, a comprehensive understanding of the donor site anatomy is essential for achieving optimal results. In this paper, we document our institutional experience of AMT Flap.
MethodsWe evaluated a total of 248 cases of oral cavity cancer operated in our institute between April 2023 to April 2024 which were planned for reconstruction with free ALT Flap, out of which during surgery due to unavailability of reliable perforators or missing perforators, or tedious perforator dissection, free AMT flap was harvested using the same incision in 12 cases.
ResultsNo flap failure was present. All flaps healed uneventfully without a need for re-exploration. No donor site complications were present.
Discussion and ConclusionThe AMT flap presents an excellent alternative when a suitable ALT perforator is unavailable or has been compromised. When it comes to reconstructing large, complex soft tissue defects, particularly in the head and neck area, the chimeric AMT flap, used in conjunction with the ALT flap, stands out as one of the most effective reconstructive options. To enhance its adoption, it is vital that more centers and surgeons gain hands-on experience with this technique.
