Uveitis is the most common extra-musculoskeletal manifestation of spondyloarthritis (SpA) and is included in the classification criteria for the disease. An analysis of data from the international COMOSPA registry sheds light on the factors associated with the development of uveitis in patients with SpA as well as changes in its epidemiology since the introduction of TNF inhibitors for the treatment of SpA.
The observational cross-sectional study included 3,984 adults from 22 countries who fulfilled classification criteria for axial or peripheral SpA, of whom 831 (20.9%) experienced at least one episode of acute anterior uveitis (AAU). Among these patients, the mean prevalence of AAU was 10.5% at the time of SpA diagnosis, rising to 46.6% after 30 years.
