Three Fatisda Students Win 1st Place in Scientific Paper Competition at ACTION 2024

UNS—Three students from the Informatics Study Program at the Faculty of Information Technology and Data Science (Fatisda), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), won 1st place in the Scientific Paper category at the 2024 Academic Competition of Data Science (ACTION) held at Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa) on Sunday (10/20/2024). The winning team, named Icarus Team Reborn, comprises Muhammad Anang Fathur Rohman, Hafidh Muhammad Akbar, and Andika Kavin Septiano.

Speaking to uns.ac.id on Wednesday (10/30/2024), team member Anang explained that their project, titled “Pixel Attention HalfU-Net,” focused on environmental sustainability. The aim of their research is to streamline urban planning in Indonesia using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

“For this competition, we had the freedom to use data from any source as long as it aligned with the theme of environmental sustainability and was presented in scientific paper format. Our team developed a new deep learning method called ‘Pixel Attention HalfU-Net,’ designed to automatically detect buildings using satellite imagery. We believe this AI-driven approach can make urban planning in Indonesia more effective,” Anang explained.

The team received mentorship from Heri Prasetyo, S.Kom., M.Sc.Eng., Ph.D., a lecturer in UNS’s Informatics Study Program, who guided them through the competition’s preparation stages. The team focused on developing a deep-learning model prototype for their research.

“Under the guidance of our mentor, Dr. Heri Prasetyo, we searched for datasets suitable for this research, built the deep learning model, and conducted multiple trials to optimize its accuracy and memory efficiency,” Anang said.

Anang and his team expressed pride in their achievement at Unesa, seeing it as a milestone that demonstrates UNS’s Informatics Program’s ability to compete nationally alongside top universities.

“We are thrilled and proud of this accomplishment. The competition included some of Indonesia’s most prestigious universities, so our achievement highlights the UNS Informatics Program’s competitiveness and excellence on a national scale,” Anang added. HUMAS UNS
