Chapter Six - Inflammatory breast cancer: As surgical oncologists, what can we do?

Breast cancer management is basically surgical in the early stages for most types of breast cancer (Gandhi et al., 2022). Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare but aggressive form of breast cancer that needs increased research to specify a therapeutic regimen that can improve patient outcomes (Jagsi et al., 2022). IBC accounts for less than 5% of all breast cancer cases in the United States, with a higher incidence in North Africa and contributing to 7% of breast cancer-caused mortality (Hance et al., 2005, Manai et al., 2019). Recommended guidelines are primary neoadjuvant medical therapy followed by mastectomy and axillary node dissection for responding patients, followed by radiotherapy (Adesoye, Irwin, Sun, Lucci, & Teshome, 2021).
