Cannabidiol and epilepsy

Epilepsy, a complex neurological disorder characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures, presents a considerable challenge for both patients and medical professionals (Devinsky, Vezzani, et al., 2018). While currently available pharmacological treatments (antiseizure drugs, ASDs; also known as “antiepileptic” or “anticonvulsant” drugs) contribute to reduce the probability of seizure occurrence, their limitations in addressing severe epileptic syndromes and their associated side effects have spurred a quest for additional therapies (Loscher, 2019). This chapter aims to provide an overview of the antiseizure properties of cannabidiol (CBD) and its potential mechanisms of action, as revealed by preclinical models for studying ASDs. We will begin by introducing fundamental concepts and mechanisms in epileptology and the existing shortcomings of current ASD. Subsequently, we will briefly examine the history of CBD and the clinical studies showing its efficacy in the treatment of various types of epilepsies or epileptic syndromes. Finally, we will discuss the proposed mechanisms through which CBD exerts its antiseizure effects.
