J Urol. 2023;210(3):492–9. https://doi.org/10.1097/ju.0000000000003559. This study represents the first large cohort analysis of the association of progression to urinary retention and delay to surgery and long-term surgical treatment outcomes among patients with BPH. This study suggests that prompt referral to urology and evaluation for surgical intervention should be considered for patients presenting with acute urinary retention.

J Urol. 1998;160(1):12-16; discussion 16-7. This is one of the first studies comparing the 5-year outcomes of watchful waiting versus surgical intervention for patients with moderate lower urinary tract symptoms. The study revealed that patients who ultimately underwent delayed surgery after a period of watchful waiting had poorer improvement in urinary symptoms and flow suggesting an association between timing of surgery and functional outcomes.
