CSM 2023 brought together many of our APTA Oncology members and experts in our field to share, collaborate, and celebrate achievements in research, clinical care, and education for oncologic physical therapy. APTA Oncology leaders and members had meaningful conversations at meetings during CSM to determine where we are succeeding, what can be done better, and to prioritize future action. Through the work shared at CSM, it is clear the Academy's mission, maximizing movement and wellness across the lifespan for persons affected by cancer and chronic illness through advocacy, engagement, education, and collaboration, is at the heart of all we do. I'd like to share with everyone recent achievements that exemplify our mission.
ADVOCACYThe talent of our members and leaders is on full display in April's issue of APTA magazine. An article, titled “Empowering Patients With Lymphedema,” shines a national spotlight within our profession on the importance of the work lymphedema therapists do. Their commitment to optimal patient care and their invaluable skill set are highlighted throughout the article, including the mention of the Lymphedema Treatment Act. Through advocacy, the Lymphedema Treatment Act was passed on December 23, 2022, and will provide access to the medically necessary compression garments current and future survivors require to maintain their quality of life without additional financial burden. This was a tremendous effort to push through, and I congratulate all involved who helped champion this important legislation.
ENGAGEMENTBased on feedback, Academy leadership is prioritizing opportunities for involvement in the Academy, as we are committed to continuing or forward momentum in engagement. In order to continue the conversations we had at CSM, we will be hosting virtual Town Halls and increasing the use of our social media to ensure we hear all voices to push forward our collective agenda.
EDUCATIONAside from the robust oncology programming offered at CSM, the Academy was able to debut 2 important offerings: a significant resource and exciting initiative. The Oncology Entry Level DPT Guidelines is a resource for professional education created to help provide a standard for DPT programs setting up future physical therapists and physical therapist assistants for success. Our free student membership initiative increases access to our resources and expertise aligning with the same goal mentioned earlier.
COLLABORATIONThe reach of our Academy has been expanded over the years with our collaboration and partnerships with outside organizations such as the Commission on Cancer, National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, and World Physiotherapy/IPT-Hope. We have a seat at many tables and are proud to serve our membership to advance our common goals.
Best regards,
Laura Sheridan, PT, DPT, CLT
