Over the last few decades, it has been exciting to see how MR imaging and ultrasound have made leaps and bounds in diagnosis, characterization, and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. These imaging techniques that do not contain ionizing radiation can be used separately but are often complementary. Many imagers are learning about the potential of this area, including how and when to perform these studies as well as how to interpret them. This issue elucidates the application of ultrasound and MR imaging for musculoskeletal imaging with cutting-edge material and visuals.

You can expect to see details about MR imaging and ultrasound for imaging of muscle, peripheral nerves, the brachial plexus, sarcomas and other soft tissue masses, painful total hip arthroplasty, rheumatologic disorders, and acute and chronic joint disorders. These subjects have been enhanced with state-of-the-art images.

Thanks to those who participated in this project for your excellent work that will enlighten our fellow imagers. Special thanks to Jan Fritz, Editor of this issue of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Clinics of North America. Dr Fritz, who is Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Musculoskeletal Radiology at NYU, has done a great job of choosing the best authors to spread the word, including himself. These individuals have been recognized as having world-class expertise in their subject.

I predict that readers will constantly refer to this valuable synopsis on the use of ultrasound and MR imaging for musculoskeletal imaging. Put this reference prominently on the shelf in your reading room or make a note of it for online reading wherever you interpret and perform studies.
