In Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) clinical practice, we too often encounter wound and skin care medical conditions with related complications. Whether the condition is the result of trauma, burn, surgery, pressure, diabetes, lymphedema, or from other medical consequences, we provide care beyond any required surgical intervention. PM&R offers unique interdisciplinary collaboration with doctors, physical and occupational therapists, nurses as well as orthotic and prosthetic professionals within the field. Together, PM&R professionals treat the person as a whole, which might include evaluations of nutrition, functional abilities, socioeconomic limitations, and psychological well-being. We have the training, experience, and passion to not only treat wounds and skin care but also prevent them in high-risk patient populations. In this issue of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics of North America, a group of outstanding and dedicated authors, who worked tirelessly during the difficult COVID-19 pandemic period, compiled the abundant evidence-based information on wound and skin care to serve as a valuable reference for physiatrists as well as other health care professionals. Within this issue, we aim to enhance the knowledge and our clinical capacity to effectively care for our patient populations, reduce unnecessary referrals, and ultimately offer our patients a better quality of life.
It is with great honor that we thank all contributors and practitioners for their ongoing contributions toward our goal.
