The study included 80 mice, 20 in the control groups and 60 in the experimental groups. Mice were divided into two major categories immunocompetent and immunosuppressed. The study started by a preliminary trial including 5 IC mice given a combination of 100 mg/kg of each of the 2 drugs PZQ and Kalobin. According to the results obtained, settled groups for IC mice included: 5 mice given 200 mg/kg PZQ, 6 mice given 50 mg/kg PZQ, 5 mice given 200 mg/kg Kalobin, 5 mice given a 50 mg/kg combination of each drug. The settled subgroups for IS drugs included: 5 mice given 200 mg/kg PZQ, 6 mice given 50 mg/kg PZQ, 6 mice given 200 mg/kg Kalobin, and 5 mice given a 50 mg/kg combination of each drug. All mice were sacrificed nine wpi. Assessment included parasitological parameters, measurement of hepatic granuloma number and size. Immunohistochemical procedure to detect the expression of VEGF.Therapy with Kalobin combined to PZQ proved to be superior to the sole PZQ, as shown by its effect on TWB and oogram pattern and greater reduction in intestinal and hepatic egg counts in IS groups. The combination (50 mg/kg each) approached the individual higher PZQ dose (200 mg/kg) in reducing the granuloma number and was even better in reducing VEGF expression in IC groups with a better impact in IS groups. Individual Kalobin had an unexpected moderate potential effect. Keywords Anti-schistosomal; Kalobin; praziquantel; S. mansoni; experimental study; immunomodulation; VEGF Main Subjects Helminthology
