[Culture] Race, migration, and sexuality in focus
In 1976, photographer Sunil Gupta wandered down Christopher Street, New York, with
his camera in hand. It was a time after the Stonewall riots but before the AIDS crisis,
a time of gay liberation and acceptance. His photos candidly captured the emerging
gay public as they walked around the West Village in a style that can only be described
as splendidly seventies: black aviators, collared bomber jackets, and majestic moustaches.
This series of black and white photos, simply entitled Christopher Street (1976), are part of From Here to Eternity, an
exhibition of Gupta's photographs that span his influential five-decade career, held at The
Photographer's Gallery, London (Oct 9, 2020–Feb 21, 2021).
