In his speech, the Acting University President, Professor Fahad Al-Harbi, emphasized that December 18 is recognized by UNESCO as World Arabic Language Day, celebrating one of the oldest, most influential, and widely spoken living languages. He remarked that Arabic is not only a means of communication but also the language of Islam, reflected in the eternal miracle of the Qur’an, as well as a language of cultural identity and civilizational depth. He acknowledged the challenges faced by Arabic in adapting to the rapid pace of technological advancement but praised its resilience and ability to evolve in the digital and artificial intelligence domains, where many tools and systems are being developed to support it.
Dr. Mashael Al-Akli, Dean of the College of Arts, highlighted the significant attention the Arabic language receives under Saudi Vision 2030, aligning with its global and cultural status. She noted that the Human Capability Development Program Strategy emphasizes the promotion and development of Arabic. The College of Arts has long worked to enhance the language’s status, develop educational tools, and expand its reach. Through university support, the Arabic program achieved full accreditation for its undergraduate program and aims to secure similar recognition for its master’s program. Graduates from the Arabic department ranked first in the professional teacher licensing exams across Saudi universities.
Additionally, the college launched a diploma for teaching Arabic to non-native speakers, with plans to establish an Arabic language institute for non-native speakers. Dr. Al-Akli also highlighted the university's collaboration with the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language, resulting in significant publications such as "The Mother Tongue: Concepts and Issues," a comprehensive study addressing key topics related to Arabic and its applications in technology. Other works include "Teaching Arabic and Market Needs" and contributions to the Ministry of Culture’s series on linguistic diversity and endangered languages.
