Behavioural therapy app for fibromyalgia

Cognitive behavioural therapy, including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), is recommended as part of a multimodal approach to the management of fibromyalgia. The phase III PROSPER-FM trial has now shown that a self-guided smartphone-based ACT programme is safe and improves clinical outcomes in adults with fibromyalgia.

ACT aims to enhance patients’ capacity to adapt to challenges and achieve personal goals, leading to changes in their reaction to symptoms. In the PROSPER-FM trial, 275 participants across 25 centres in the USA were randomly assigned to receive digital therapy with the Stanza ACT app or with an active control app that offered daily symptom and function tracking and access to relevant educational materials.
