In alignment with Qatar University (QU)'s strategic goal of commitment to exploration for knowledge, that fuels scientific research and discovery, the Qatar University Young Scientists Center (QUYSC) has officially inaugurated The Summer Research Internship Program 2024. Prof. Mariam Al-Maadeed, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, graced the program's official launch at a ceremonial event at QU's Research Complex, accompanied by a significant gathering of academicians and students.

The Summer Research Internship Program targets undergraduate and graduate students, offering them practical training in essential scientific research methodologies and fostering the development of technical and laboratory skills. With a total of 650 students participating in 82 projects under the guidance of 13 research centers and 8 diverse colleges within QU, this program represents a significant opportunity for academic and professional growth.

Noteworthy collaborations with esteemed institutions such as Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO), Qatar Fertilizer Company (QAFCO), Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Emerson Qatar have further enriched the program's offerings, providing students with valuable industry insights and hands-on experience.

In her opening address, Prof. Mariam Al-Maadeed, VP for Research and Graduate Studies, emphasized the importance of practical internships in meeting the evolving demands of society and the job market. Prof. Al-Maadeed stated, “This program is crucial for the state of Qatar, as it encourages our youth to develop their competencies and capabilities, thereby contributing to sustainable development and a knowledge-based economy.”

The inauguration ceremony included an orientation session by the QUYSC, outlining the program's objectives, key outcomes, and the various pathways offered this year. The program offers three tracks; first track, Outcomes-Directed Research, Second track, Research and Training, and Third track, Industry-Based Research.

Additionally, previous program participants shared their experiences and highlighted the skills and expertise gained during their scientific research journey in the Summer Research Internship Program. Furthermore, Mr. Abdalhakim Y. M. Bshawi, Senior Research and Instruction Librarian, delivered a lecture on “Library Resources and Tools for Research” for students participating in the First track “Outcomes-Directed Research.”

Prof. Noora Jaber Al-Thani, Director of the QUYSC, extended her best wishes to the students and underscored the program's significance in nurturing young talents and encouraging innovation. She remarked, “This program is essential in strengthening the young talent pool from diverse backgrounds by developing the competences necessary to survive, adapt, and thrive in a fast-changing world. It also contributes significantly to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 17 through capacity-building.”
