Ethical issues in organ donation

Organ donation is lifesaving. The benefits of solid organ transplantation are indisputable, and for kidney transplantation, these include longer life expectancy, improved quality of life, and very significant cost savings compared with long-term dialysis.1 Last year in the UK, 1425 deceased donations resulted in just over 3500 transplants. However, 7000 people were identified as needing a solid organ transplant in 2022–2023 and sadly over 400 people died waiting for one.2
