Pediatric Vaccination Outside of the Medical Home: Updates on Alternative Settings for Vaccine Delivery

During the COVID-19 pandemic, childhood vaccine delivery was disrupted due to decreased access to primary care practices, concerns regarding exposure risk, and greater use of telehealth visits. Expanding vaccine delivery beyond the medical home was promoted as a strategy to increase vaccine uptake, especially among high-risk patients. In “Childhood and Adolescent Vaccination in Alternative Settings,” we described the advantages and challenges of delivering vaccines in diverse locations.1 We highlighted key considerations for each site, i.e. importance of adequate funding, enhanced staff training, and effective communication across settings. In this report, we review the latest evidence regarding childhood vaccination in alternative settings, areas of progress, and opportunities to improve equitable vaccine delivery and acceptance.
