"A different country, a different language, a different culture…" Educational Experiences of International Nursing Students Studying in Turkey: A Qualitative Study

In higher education, individuals who enroll in programs at a university outside their home country are called international students and today, nursing education is increasingly gaining an international dimension (Mitchell et al., 2017). Nursing students come from different cultures and differ from each other in terms of their educational systems and practices (Kol et al., 2021). This diversity requires that educational programs should be adapted to various needs and expectations. Understanding the specific learning needs of international nursing students and providing significant support to meet these needs are crucial for the success of nursing education programs (Eden et al., 2021). Addressing these needs is essential for grasping the internationalization trend in nursing education and comprehensively addressing the experiences and challenges encountered by these students.

The number of international students in Turkey has been increasing over the years. According to the data released by the UNESCO, Turkey is among the top 10 countries which host the highest number of international students in the world and according to the statistics, there were 224,048 international students in Turkey in 2022 (UNESCO, 2023). According to the report released by the Turkish Council of Higher Education (CoHE), there were 301,694 international students from 198 different countries in Turkey in 2023 (CoHE, 2023). International nursing students register with nursing faculties in different regions of Turkey and complete their nursing education. International students coming to Turkey take one year of Turkish language course and a four-year undergraduate nursing education program and they can receive their two-year master's degree or three or four year doctoral education after their undergraduate education.
