Effect of Christmas Holidays on Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in Users of Glucose Flash Systems

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is a disease with significant impact on health care systems due to its high prevalence and the severe consequences of its chronic complications. As it demands constant attention to numerous factors, a link has been extensively demonstrated between chronic glycemic control variability, psychological stress,1,2 educational level,3 and economic deprivation.4, 5, 6

The influence of holiday periods on health has been studied in relation to other diseases. It has been well-documented that during the holiday season, patients tend to gain weight6,7 and experience worsened control of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D)7,8 as well as an increase in cardiovascular mortality.9 However, the literature examining the influence of holiday periods on the management of T1D is limited,10, 11, 12 with few studies focusing on adults.13

Currently, continuous and flash glucose monitoring (F-CGM) sensors are included in the common service portfolio of the Spanish National Health System. Increased adherence to this monitoring system, as well as the quality and quantity of information that F-CGM provides, have significantly improved chronic control and offered precise information on the status of individuals with type T1D.14, 15, 16, 17, 18

The objective of this study was to assess the influence of the Christmas holidays period on individuals with T1D employing F-CGM, considering the effect of well-established confounding factors unrelated to glycemic control.
