Sepsis-Induced Coagulopathy: A Prelude to DIC

F1

ABSTRACT: Critically ill patients with sepsis are at high risk for bleeding complications. Systemic infection and its associated inflammatory cascade can significantly alter the balance of native coagulation/anticoagulation systems as well as influence platelet function and the integrity of fibrinogenesis. Williams and colleagues present a narrative review of sepsis-induced coagulopathy and draw its distinction from overt disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). They offer an insightful and in-depth review of the major hemostatic factors involved in this pathophysiologic process. A visual summary of their review is presented in this infographic, though the reader is strongly encouraged to review the cited article for a more thorough understanding of the illustrated concepts.
