Ultrasound Examinations Performed by Registered Nurses in Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Reproductive Medicine Settings: Clinical Competencies and Education Guide, Fifth Edition

The performance of ultrasound examinations is an appropriate practice for registered nurses (RNs) specializing in obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive medicine as dictated by the clinical situation. Performing these ultrasound examinations represents an expanded nursing role and thus is not to be undertaken by novice or inexperienced obstetric, gynecologic, or reproductive medicine RNs. Prior to adding this expanded role to clinical practice, RNs are advised to (American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine [AIUM], 2018a; Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography [SDMS], 2011):

verify that performance of ultrasound is within the scope of practice as defined by their state;

complete the didactic content and hands-on experience outlined in this document;

confirm that a clinician’s institution/practice site has a written policy, procedure, and protocol authorizing ultrasound performance by RNs; and

review education criteria and recommended competencies from other professional organizations when applicable (e.g., American College of Nurse-Midwives, 2018).

The purpose of this document is to describe the guidelines for the core content of educational programs and clinical practicums for specific components of limited and detailed ultrasounds in obstetric, gynecologic, and reproductive medicine for RNs. Advanced clinical providers, specifically women’s health nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, and certified midwives, have specific training and competency guidelines from the AIUM (2018a, 2018b), and these clinicians are asked to refer to the document for further guidance. Actual achievement of competency depends upon individual skills, training, and clinical experience.
