Dear Editor,

We would like to share ideas on “Salivary proteome profile of women during the fertile phase of menstrual cycle as characterized by mass spectrometry.”[1] Saibaba et al. concluded that “Total salivary proteome profile has been listed …. validation is required before arriving to a candidate bio-marker protein.”[1] We agree that there is potential that salivary proteome might be a useful biomarker. In laboratory medicine, there are many considerations on accuracy and interference of salivary proteome biomarker. Contamination is easy and specimen collection needs a good procedure. In the present report, tooth brushing is used for preparation. However, other sources of interferences such as food and drink as well as quality of tooth brushing and toothpaste should be discussed. Furthermore, underlying physiological condition of the subjects might interfere salivary proteome profile. Nutritional status of subjects might also affect the profile.[2] Further studies to assess those confounding factors are interesting.
