Facilitated Virtual Synchronous Debriefing: A Practical Approach

Until the COVID pandemic, virtual simulation in nursing education was not commonplace and there was limited training for educators in best practices for this teaching pedagogy. Of significance was the lack of training related to debriefing virtual experiences in ways other than the in-person small group format. The aim of this paper is to review the evidence related to facilitated virtual synchronous debriefing after a virtual simulation and provide guidance on how to effectively use this debriefing process. We will share lessons learned using facilitated virtual synchronous debrief and provide practical tips on the process, including ways to foster a safe virtual environment that promotes psychological safety for students. Lastly, a step- by- step guide for facilitating virtual synchronous debriefing sessions is provided.
