[Profile] Loretta Sweet Jemmott—a voice for the voiceless

Gumption is the word Loretta Sweet Jemmott uses to describe her personal and professional journey. As a first-generation college student from a “very low-income community” in Philadelphia, PA, USA, Jemmott experienced many barriers on her way to becoming a leading authority on HIV/AIDS prevention and health promotion. Regardless of the obstacles, Jemmott has always used her mother's tenacity as a source of motivation. “My mother was a hard working and determined woman who pushed me. She was my first role model”, says Jemmott. “She was actively involved in her community and church and instilled the love of service within me at a young age”. Jemmott's desire to pursue nursing as a profession was shaped by the nurses who took care of her while recovering from injuries sustained from a car crash at age 7 years.
