A comprehensive study into the evaluation of non-conventional lanthanum phosphate nanospheres, inside a water-pool of reverse micellar scaffolds: employed in sensory assessment of surfactant free TiO2 based Pickering emulsion formulation

Herein, a non-conventional lanthanum phosphate (LaPO4) nanospheres are synthesised in a water-pool of W/O microemulsions (Tween 20/1-butanol/water/Toluene) scaffolds and employed in sensory assessment of surfactant free TiO2 based Pickering emulsion formulations. TEM and FESEM microstructural analysis have been carried out to examine the evaluation of nanospheres inside the core of reverse micelle. Both types of electron microscopy identify two distinct phases in the growth of nanospheres: nucleation phase (5-15 min) at which only nanospheres of smaller dimensions are seen, and growth phase (15-60 min) wherein larger dimensions nanospheres are observed. LaPO4 nanospheres are extremely hydrophilic and alone fails to provide stability to the O/W Pickering emulsions and consequently demands in situ hydrophobization. Zeta potentials suggest, LaPO4 nanospheres have a positive surface charge (+57 mV) and eventually, oppositely charged solid TiO2 nanoparticle is therefore introduced onto the surface of the synthesised LaPO4. The adsorption of TiO2 ensures the evaluations of amphiphilic nature of nanospheres through the formation of LaPO4@TiO2 nanocomposites. Additionally, TEM analysis supported no morphological alterations are occurred upon adsorptions. The so-prepared nanocomposites thereafter started to provide an extra stability (due to the lower inter-droplet coalescences) to the O/W Pickering emulsion and it’s sustained up to 4 weeks and even more. The stability of emulsion droplets is supported by the optical micrographs analysis. Moreover, such attainment of stability therefore, successfully opens a new idea of surfactant free stable Pickering emulsion formations.
