Choice of suture technique may mitigate figure-of-8 deformity in slide tracheoplasty

Slide tracheoplasty is an established surgical approach to treating cases of pediatric tracheal stenosis [1].

Figure of 8 deformity as a complication of slide tracheoplasty is a potentially life-threatening complication of attempting to repair pediatric tracheal stenosis. The deformity can require immediate peri-operative repair or emergent post-operative revision [2].

The differing complication of figure of 8 deformity rate between different surgeons may be due to unrealized differences in suture technique between surgeons and this paper attempts to examine if two common and one modified approach to suturing shows any visually apparent internal or external evidence of figure of 8 deformity.
