Ilse N. Beaufort et al. Endoscopic submucosal dissection for early esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: long-term results from a Western cohort
Data on endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early
esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) are mainly
derived from Asian studies. This retrospective study demonstrated
that ESD was technically successful for treatment
of early ESCC in a Western cohort, though the curative
resection rate was relatively low. Regardless of noncurative
or curative resection, long-term prognosis of patients was
limited, mainly due to unrelated comorbidities. The potential
benefit of additional treatment after a noncurative resection
should be carefully balanced against the individual
risk of dying from causes other than esophageal cancer.
