I want to thank Dr. Stephen W.P. Kemp for serving as guest editor for this issue of Seminars in Plastic Surgery on “Michigan Special Issue: 60 Years of Michigan Plastic Surgery.” I also appreciate the efforts made by each outstanding author for sharing with us their knowledge and expertise.

Stephen W.P. Kemp, PhD, is currently the Director of the Neuromuscular Laboratory at the University of Michigan. He completed his Honors Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto and completed his PhD at the University of Calgary. Following his tenure in Calgary, he accepted and completed two postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Toronto, Hospital for Sick Children.

His research is focused on the anatomical, sensorimotor, and functional evaluation of peripheral nerve regeneration through bioengineered conduits in rats. The primary goal of his laboratory is to understand and investigate mechanisms of peripheral nerve regeneration following nerve injury and repair. His laboratory is also interested in chronic pain pathways following nerve injury. In addition, his laboratory investigates novel paradigms concerning neuroplasticity and how synaptic transmission in the central nervous system is regulated by biochemical processes within neurons and by glial–neuronal interactions.

He has been the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on 19 externally funded grants totaling over US$10.2 million in funding. He has published 60 peer-reviewed journal articles that have a cumulative citation count of 2,794 and a current h-index of 30. Dr. Kemp currently holds grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense (DoD), the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Plastic Surgery Foundation (PSF), and the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand (AFSH).
