Return to play (RTP) in sport is a topic of great interest with huge implications in the athletic world. When we initially proposed this special issue, it was our goal to highlight the valuable role of the radiologist in guiding RTP decisions and helping predict time away from sport. As radiologists, we have many opportunities to add value by accurately characterizing and grading injuries, identifying reinjuries and postoperative complications, communicating effectively with team medical staff, and potentially offering image-guided interventions.
This issue covers the importance of imaging in all aspects of RTP, including the professional athlete, where decisions can have major ramifications for both the player and team alike. Hamstring injuries, a topic that was the basis of many early RTP studies, are covered with great detail in a dedicated article. Osseous injuries, such as acute bone bruise and repetitive stress injuries, are likewise thoroughly discussed. Other key topics, such as percutaneous interventions in athletes, reinjury following RTP, postsurgery RTP, and special considerations in children and adolescent athletes, are all reviewed. Lastly, hot topics, including the potential role of imaging following concussion and future applications of artificial intelligence in predicting RTP, round out this truly comprehensive issue.
