Unmasking Sweet Syndrome in Association with Cervical Carcinoma: A Unique Clinical Encounter

Purpose

Sweet syndrome, also known as acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis, is a rare cutaneous paraneoplastic syndrome often associated with malignancies. Sweet syndrome is frequently associated with hematologic malignancies, particularly acute myelocytic leukemia, but rarely occurs with solid tumors, especially cervical cancers.

Case Presentation

We present a case of Sweet syndrome in a 70-year-old female with a history of cervical malignancy. The patient exhibited characteristic clinical features, including fever, edema, and painfully raised plaques on the upper and lower limbs. Histological analysis confirmed a dense dermal infiltration with mature neutrophils which was suggestive of Sweet syndrome.

Conclusion

The association between Sweet syndrome and cervical malignancies is relatively rare, with only a few reported cases in the literature. Therefore, clinicians must be vigilant when encountering patients with cervical malignancies who present with atypical skin lesions during or after treatment for cervical cancer. Misdiagnosis is common due to its resemblance to infectious conditions. Treatment typically involves corticosteroids. Recognition of Sweet syndrome in malignancy patients can aid in evaluating and managing the underlying disease.
