Cardiovascular disease risk communication: Strategies, impact, and future directions

The choices we make in our daily lives play a significant role in determining the likelihood of developing chronic diseases, with a particular emphasis on cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is crucial to recognize that a significant portion of CVD can be prevented through the proactive management of behavioral risk factors.1 Addressing habits such as tobacco use, adopting a healthier diet to combat obesity, promoting regular physical activity, and limiting excessive consumption of alcohol are effective measures for preventing CVD.1,2 This emphasizes the significance of lifestyle modifications and public health initiatives in reducing the incidence of CVD and promoting overall cardiovascular well-being. While there is compelling evidence supporting positive lifestyle measures, achieving progress in integrating these practices into individuals' daily lives has proven challenging. Recent perspectives on low health literacy underscore the importance of implementing strategic actions within healthcare systems to mitigate some of the consequences.

Per the American Heart Association's (AHA) recommendation, improving diet and lifestyle remains a crucial element in preventing CVD, a fact that holds despite significant advancements in clinical medicine.3 The current challenge for healthcare providers and researchers is to formulate and implement effective clinical and public health risk communication strategies that can foster enduring lifestyle changes. There are numerous tools available for predicting CVD risk, including risk score assessments and various strategies for risk reduction. To empower individuals to make informed decisions about risk reduction, they must have a comprehensive understanding of their personal risk.4 This understanding can be achieved through the implementation of systematic CVD risk communication strategies. These strategies aim to effectively convey the complex information surrounding CVD risk, facilitating a clearer comprehension for individuals and enabling them to make well-informed decisions on how to reduce their risk.4 The current review attempts to summarize diverse CVD risk communication strategies, evaluate their effectiveness in reducing CVD risk, and provide insights into future perspectives.
