The European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry entered a new period of development

Dear readers, EAPD members and colleagues worldwide,

The year 2023 was a milestone for the European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry, achieving the Impact Factor (IF).

The European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry is the official journal of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD) and it has been taken over by the Springer Nature group from the Academy’s own publisher as of 2013. The Academy’s journal started in 1999 under a different title and since 2006 and from volume 6 under the present title, European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry. The journal focuses on new and important findings of interest to Paediatric Dentistry, emphasises on the critical evaluation of relevant clinical and basic science research related to children, and publishes special issues on important topics.

Since its starting year, our journal presented a continuous course of development and scientific recognition. Both colleagues previously involved with the journal’s editorship, Professors Martin Curzon and Jack Toumba, together with the Editorial Board, were the reason behind such development. Since the 2020s, the journal has undertaken specific changes, becoming even more highly respected within the global dental community, whilst its reputation for publishing important and hot topics has attracted research from all continents. Section Editors have been appointed and the Editorial Board has been substantially enriched. In addition, the journal’s main strength remained the tight link with EAPD together with the efficient publishing and distribution handling by the Springer Nature Publisher through a long-standing, recently renewed, contract.

As a result of the above changes, in 2023, the European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry, during its 23rd volume and following continuous efforts by both the editorial team and the Publisher, managed to achieve the last of the main goals since its development. The effort started in the beginning of 2022, with the Publisher’s and Editor’s in Chief enquiry for the IF. Subsequently, a noticeable 2.2 (5 year IF 2.5), being quite high for first entrance to the IF metrics, was achieved.

Overall, the 2022 data released by Clarivate for the journal metrics are as follows:

Furthermore, the graph below clearly shows the European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry citations development as analysed by Scimago journal ranking:

An additional important metric, indicative of the journal’s reputation and readability, is the impressively increased annual number of article downloads from the journal’s site, https://link.springer.com/journal/40368, in the last 5 years. This figure was 79.000 in 2019 and at present is reaching 300.000 (2023).

Finally, all the above were achieved with the continuous efforts of all the editorial team and the reviewers of the journal. Proof for this was the Nature/Springer Publisher announcement that ‘the European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry is a top-rated Springer Nature journal rated in the Top 25% of qualifying journals for editorial excellence’ as has been seen in the ‘journal author satisfaction survey’.

I would very much like to sincerely thank the Section Editors, Drs Johan Aps, Marlies Elfrink, Hani Nazzal, Sobia Zafar, Huei Jinn Tong and Susan Parekh, the distinguished members of the Editorial Board and the devoted reviewers, for all that we achieved together these last 5 years. In the end of 2024, the end of the present 6 years editorship period, a different journal will be handed-over to the new Editor in Chief and Editorial team.
