Mucormycosis presenting as intestinal perforation: A pathologist perspective

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection seen in an immunocompromised host such as those with diabetes mellitus, HIV, malignancy, organ transplantation or on long-term steroid therapy [1], [2]]. It is caused by fungi of subphylum Mucormycotina, order Mucorales [3], [4]]. It is often fatal and associated with high mortality rates. It most commonly affects the rhino orbital and cerebral region as well as the pulmonary region. The intestine is rarely involved [5], [6]]. Here we present a rare case of intestinal mucormycosis in an immunocompetent host presenting as bowel perforation.
