The Relationship Between Uncertainty and Psychological Distress Among Family Caregivers of Patients With Delirium in Intensive Care Units: A Cross-Sectional Survey

Amal Haji Assa, PhD, MSN, RN, is an assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Nursing Practices under the Critical Care Nursing Speciality in the Faculty of Nursing, Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah, Saudi Arabia; and a former PhD student in the College of Graduate Health Sciences, The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, Tennessee. Her work interests include patient and family care, nursing education, and research in critical care settings, especially in delirium management and prevention.

Xueyuan Cao, PhD, is an associate professor of Biostatistics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, Tennessee. He is interested in broad collaboration and methodological research in clinical trials, pharmacogenomics, genome-wide association analysis (GWAs), and integrating multiple forms of genomic data and clinical outcomes. Dr Cao has over 80 peer-reviewed publications and several software packages in R and Bioconductor.

Leanne M. Boehm, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, FAAN, is an assistant professor in the School of Nursing, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. Her reserach program is in eliminating delirium, oversedation, and immobilization in intensive care, and maximize the quality of survivorship for patients and family members following critical illness. Dr. Boehm current research is evaluating the efficacy of telehealth ICU recovery care services and implementation of digital interventions to enhance family engagement and empowerment in the ICU.

Reba A. Umberger, PhD, MS, RN, CCRN, is an associate professor with Loewenberg College of Nursing at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. Her program of research focuses on improving outcomes for survivors of sepsis and their informal caregivers.

Michael A. Carter, DNSc, DNP, is a distinguished professor emeritus in the College of Nursing, The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Memphis, Tennessee. His current research is in two areas. The first is attempting to better understand pain in older persons particularly those living with Alzheimer’s disease. The second area focuses on health policy research related to primary care delivery by nurse practitioners in the U.S. and Australia.
