The relationship between professional values, ethical sensitivities and caring behaviors among nursing students: A structural equation modeling approach

Professional values are the standards accepted by a profession in line with ethical principles, directing education and practices and affecting beliefs and attitudes (Weis and Schank, 2009). Professional values of nursing are the most important components of care (Kaya and Boz, 2019). And strong professional values have proven to be a guarantee of care quality (Kaya and Dalgiç, 2021, Monroe, 2019). Nursing education is the first step in enabling nursing students to adopt the professional values, raise awareness and thus develop their professional identity (Ertuğrul et al., 2022, Kantek et al., 2017, Kavradım et al., 2019). Ye et al. (2018) stated that the professional values gained during the nursing education process enable nursing students to perform better in the clinical environment (Ye et al., 2018). According to Bakır and Su (2022), awareness of professional values is essential for nursing students to fulfill their roles effectively and adequately in clinical practice (Bakır and Su, 2022). Therfore, supporting the development of professional values in nursing students is critical to ensure their competency on graduation (Gassas and Salem, 2022). Although professional values are accepted as the basis of nursing caring behaviors all over the world, we do not have enough information about the effect of professional values on ethical sensitivity and caring behaviors in the education of nursing students.
