We need a Pride in Microbiology Network

Sixty-seven countries still criminalize the 2SLGBTQIA+ (two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, plus) community. Some governments are actively pursuing and celebrating anti-2SLGBTQIA+ legislation, and even in places where human-rights legislation protects 2SLGBTQIA+ people, hate crimes are on the rise. The issues facing justice and belonging impact every facet of life for those in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Although science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields have made advances that better society, they are not immune to the impacts of discrimination. Challenges persist for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in STEM, starting from the beginning of one’s career. For example, STEM students identifying as a sexual minority were 7% less likely to be retained in four-year degree programmes compared with their heterosexual counterparts1. For those that pursue a career in STEM, it has also been shown that 2SLGBTQIA+ people were 20.2% more likely to report professional devaluation and consider leaving STEM fields altogether2.
