Temporal artery biopsy

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a common systemic vasculitis affecting patients over the age of 50 years. It is characterized by the involvement of medium and large vessels, particularly the cranial arteries, producing symptoms of headache, jaw claudication, and scalp tenderness [1]. The most feared sequela of cranial vasculitis is ischemia resulting in permanent vision loss. As such, GCA is considered a medical emergency [2]. While clinical symptoms and laboratory data can be suggestive, a temporal artery biopsy (TAB) has been considered the gold standard for diagnosis. Herein, we will review the indications, technical aspects and considerations, and histology of TAB.
