FKIP UNS Holds Welcome Ceremony and Orientation for International PLP Students

UNS – The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta pleasingly welcomed the arrival of three foreign students from the Philippines to take part in the SEA-Teacher Batch-9th program. The arrival of students from Ilo-Ilo Science and Technology University (ISATU) was welcomed by the Dean of FKIP UNS, Dr. Mardiyana, M.Sc., along with the faculty leadership and the program organizing committee on Wednesday (10/5/2023).

The three students will take part in the SEA-Teacher Batch-9th program at FKIP UNS until 1 June 2023. The first student, Nathan Joel Amatorio, from the Faculty of Education/Science will do an educational internship at SMPN 4 Surakarta. The second student, Mel Voltaire Crispolon, from the Faculty of Education/Information and Communication Technology will do an educational internship at SMAN 1 Surakarta. Meanwhile, the third student, Anthony B. Jimenez, from the Faculty of Education/Food Service Management will do an educational internship at SMKN 7 Surakarta.

In his remarks, Dr. Mardiyana expressed his high appreciation for the collaboration between FKIP UNS and Ilo-Ilo Science and Technology University (ISATU) as the first cooperation between the two universities.

“The presence of these students from the Philippines will certainly be a valuable experience for us, as well as opening up opportunities for wider cooperation in the future,” he said.

He also said that FKIP UNS through this program wanted to introduce UNS in general so that it could become one of the efforts to attract international students to join the UNS academic community.

SEA-Teacher or Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia is a teaching internship program organized by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) to improve the quality of education in Southeast Asia. This project is based on SEAMEO’s seven priority areas for eleven SEAMEO member countries to work together in improving the quality of education in Southeast Asia, including “Revitalizing Teacher Education” which is one of the priorities in building and strengthening teacher capacity in the region.

The program duration is one month and is based on a cost-sharing mechanism. Student roles and responsibilities are assigned on a weekly basis over a one-month period, such as making observations, helping teach, teaching, and reflecting on the results. In addition, the host university will provide mentors to guide students during the internship period.

As a facilitator in the SEA-Teacher program, the International Office (IO) of FKIP UNS also played an important role in preparing for the arrival of foreign students from the Philippines. IO FKIP UNS has collaborated with the Ilo-Ilo Science and Technology University (ISATU) in preparing an internship program that suits the needs and potential of students who will do internships in schools in Surakarta.

Apart from that, IO FKIP UNS has also coordinated the arrival of foreign students starting from transportation, lodging, to social and cultural activities while in Surakarta. This is done so that foreign students from the Philippines can feel comfortable and be helped while participating in the SEA-Teacher program at FKIP UNS.

IO FKIP UNS also held an initial orientation for newly arrived foreign students so they could introduce the campus environment and local culture, as well as provide information regarding the Indonesian language, ways of life, and acting in Indonesia. It is hoped that with the role of IO FKIP UNS, the SEA-Teacher program can run smoothly and provide optimal benefits for both parties. Hopefully the presence of these foreign students from the Philippines can bring benefits and goodness to FKIP UNS and strengthen relations between Indonesia and the Philippines in the field of education.
