Ancylobacter mangrovi sp. nov., a novel endophytic bacterium isolated from mangrove plant

The genus Ancylobacter, initially named as Microcyclus (Ørskov, 1928), was renamed in 1983 by Raj (Raj, 1983) to avoid confusion and conform the rules of bacterial nomenclature. Since 2005, this genus has a definitive taxonomic status based on phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, that is, genus Ancylobacter is affiliated to the family Xanthobacteraceae, order Hyphomicrobiales and class Alphaproteobacteria (Hördt et al., 2020). At the time of writing, the genus Ancylobacter includes 11 validly named species according to LPSN (https://lpsn.dsmz.de/genus/ancylobacter): Ancylobacter aquaticus (Raj, 1983); A. rudongensis (Xin et al., 2004); A. polymorphus (Xin et al., 2006); A. vacuolatus (Xin et al., 2006); A. oerskovii (Lang et al., 2008); A. dichloromethanicus (Firsova et al., 2009); A. defluvii (Poroshina et al., 2013); A. pratisalsi (Suarez et al., 2017); A. sonchi (Agafonova et al., 2017); A. plantiphilus (Chemodurova et al., 2020) and A. lacus (Chemodurova et al., 2020).

The members within the genus Ancylobacter are described as being Gram-negative, facultative methylotrophic and aerobic bacteria, and they are widespread in nature, particularly in aquatic environments and plant rhizosphere, which seem to play an important ecological role. Cell morphologies include rod-shaped, pear-shaped, bean-shaped and pleomorphic forms. The major respiratory quinone usually is Q-10, while some species contain higher Q-9 content. The predominant fatty acids include C18:1ω7c and C19:0 cyclo ω8c, while some species have a relatively high amount of C16:0.

In this study, we report the isolation and identification of strains GSK1Z-4-2T and MQZ15Z-1. Phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses reveal that the two strains are members of the genus Ancylobacter and represent a novel species.
