TM joint ankylosis- nasopharyngeal airway a life saver before fiberoptic bronchoscopy in children- A case series

TM joint ankylosis always presents as a challenge to the anaesthesiologist in managing difficult airway and its complications in children specially with nil mouth opening. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy is a gold standard for intubating such patients. But availability of paediatric probe and determination of tube size possess another difficulty in intubation before surgery. Here, we are presenting two cases of 12 and 10 year old child with bilateral/unilateral TM joint ankylosis with almost nil mouth opening where pre bronchoscopy nasal dilatation by nasopharyngeal airway helped in relieving obstruction and selection of appropriate sized tube through fiberoptic bronchoscope under local and topical anaesthesia.
