AI outperforms sonographers at diagnosing cardiac function on echocardiography

An artificial intelligence (AI)-guided workflow for initial evaluation of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in echocardiography is non-inferior to initial assessment by a sonographer, according to findings from a blinded, randomized non-inferiority trial. Moreover, cardiologists required less time to over-read and were less likely to adjust the initial AI-guided assessment, and the AI assessment was more consistent with previous independent assessments by a cardiologist. “The measurement of LVEF is essential for assessing heart failure as well as responses to chemotherapy and other drugs, so we hope that more precise measurements will allow for better patient care,” comment James Zou and David Ouyang, senior investigators of the trial.
