Teaching nursing within a population health context: From concept to exemplars

The Future of Nursing 2020–2030 report focuses on the key role of nurses in achieving health equity in the United States (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine [NASEM], 2021). To successfully meet this challenge, nurses must have knowledge and skills in the area of population health, including assessing and addressing the social determinants of health with patients and populations across care settings. Released in 2021, the Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education (AACN, 2021) addresses this need with the addition of a competency domain for population health. The competencies identified in this domain outline the measurable knowledge and skills that nurses need at both the entry and advanced practice levels to address the social determinants of health effectively. This article outlines the concept of population health, its relevance to nursing practice, and how population health is demonstrated in the Essentials and provides an exemplar of how this content can be taught across the curriculum in entry-level nursing education.
