Urban bees reveal a city’s microbiome

Urban areas are complex biological systems that encompass a diversity of species, including humans, animals and plants, each with their own microbiomes. These species interact with each other and the built environment constantly. The collective microbiome of these areas is thought to have a crucial role in the health of urban ecosystems. In a recent study, Hénaff et al. investigated the environmental microbiomes of cities by sampling urban beehives, providing insight into the surrounding metagenomic landscape that is relevant to beehive and human health.
